Can Delhi Have 25% E-Vehicles By 2023? Kejriwal Govt's Latest Plan to Curb Pollution

A target to ensure that a quarter of new vehicle registrations in Delhi be electric and with tenders for electric buses be floated this month, the Delhi government is trying to move towards what it believes is the future of transportation – zero emission vehicles. The Delhi government has long argued that the future of public transport in Delhi was “zero emission” buses and not CNG or other forms. In an interview, in October with News18.com, Jasmine Shah, Delhi Dialogue and Development Commission (DDC) chairperson Jasmine Shah had said, “Is CNG the future for Delhi? The government doesn't think so. The future is definitely zero emission and clean buses.” He had added, “There are two kinds of technology that are being talked about right now and being reviewed very seriously in the government. One are electric buses and the other is hydrogen fuel buses.” This thrust towards electric buses has persisted in the government’s policy planning alongside a thrust towards promoting electric vehicles. Among the draft’s recommendations are to start a subsidy for autos, rickshaws and two-wheelers, while also strengthening the infrastructure to provide battery charging access within 3 km range from anywhere in Delhi.
